Multimedia Storytelling: When South Africa Became Home: Adonis Musati Project
In January 2017, I partnered with StoryCenter's Silence Speaks initiative and the Adonis Musati Project (AMP) in Cape Town, to lead a four-day storytelling and participatory media workshop with a group of Peer Counsellors who help their fellow refugees, asylum seekers and migrants to access services in South Africa. The workshop took place at the U.S. State Department sponsored “American Corner” of the Cape Town Public Library.
This powerful set of stories, which touch on experiences of displacement, war, trauma, loss and resilience, are being shared in AMP's Peer Counselling Groups, and at screenings with local partners and service providers, to highlight the challenges that refugees and asylum seekers face when trying to make a new home for themselves in South Africa.
